Ohara Koson – June Artist of the Month

We are extremely excited to announce our new featured artist for the month of June! Ohara Koson is an immensely talented Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker. He worked primarily during the late 19th century and early 20th centuries. Koson was primarily recognized as a master of kacho-e which are traditional bird-and-flower designs.

In the early 1900s, Koson worked with many different publishers to design Russo-Japanese War prints, as well as general landscape prints. His earliest and rarest designs were notable for their narrow formats and soft colors.

After a ten year break to focus on painting, Koson returned to printmaking and started desiging woodblock prints for different publishers. He also served as an adviser to the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. Since Koson used numerous names and seals over the years, dating his work can be difficult. His prints can be found in major museums worldwide, as well as having prints sold on numerous websites.
